Obituary

HUDSON – David Gariepy was exhausted after returning from a 24-hour shift plowing snow last weekend, so he called his parents and asked them to take his children for the night.

“On Sunday, he called us and said he couldn’t sleep and kept tossing and turning,” said Gariepy’s stepfather, Blynn Estes. “So we said, ‘Sure, we’ll take the kids.’ ”

It would be the last time Gariepy’s parents would speak to their son.

Gariepy, the father of children ages 10 and 12, died of a heart attack. Gariepy, who was in his mid-40s, was found dead by his son Justin the next day.

“What I think happened was he got out of bed and died on his way to the floor,” Estes said.

Gariepy’s children are now living with their grandparents.

A community fundraiser is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at AJ’s Sports Bar & Grill in Hudson.

“The money is for the boys to get by on something until a decision is made,” Estes said. He said his stepson “had no insurance, and the boys are going to need some assistance.”

Estes said his grandchildren have little other family in the area and have had little contact with their mother, who lives in South Carolina, over the last decade.

Estes, who said his wife has breast cancer, said he hopes the children will stay with him permanently.

As recently as Friday, the mother of the boys had tried to remove them from the state, he said.

Estes said he expects a custody battle to move to the courtroom, but that’s a fight for another day.

He said he’s more focused on the well-being of the two boys who were left fatherless just days before Christmas.

Estes said he will support the children financially and emotionally the best he can.

An autopsy revealed that Gariepy had an enlarged heart and was susceptible to the type of heart attack that claimed his life, Estes said.

Those who remember Gariepy, such as Michael Falzone, of Hudson, say he was “gregarious, fun loving and larger than life.”

“Everyone who talked to him loved him,” Falzone said.

Although I was two years her junior in high school, I was blessed to be part of a Three Musketeers with Kathie and her then boyfriend (and my best friend) Scott Estabrook. As usual in life we separate, move away and lose touch and then one day you learn the sad truth that someone special in your life has passed. Kathie was such a beautiful person and to this day I think of her often. I love and miss you Kathie.
